Regulatory Floodway Width Estimation

Abstract:

A simple algebraic equation is presented for determining the width of the regulatory or designated floodway. The equation shows that for a given ratio of the permissible increase in flood depth to the original depth of flooding, the ratio of the associated reduction in the floodplain width over the original width is proportional to the following ratios: floodplain roughness over channel roughness, channel top width to floodplain width and channel hydraulic radius over floodplain depth of flooding.
