Abstract:

The combination dam breach and flood routing numerical model called DAMBRK has been developed by the National Weather Service (NWS) for forecasting river flooding events (Fread, 1984). Under some conditions the scheme goes unstable. No final solution is obtained without manual adjustment of input data and rerunning the simulation. This paper briefly summarizes the results of a recent project to develop an improved code that is more robust. Five nonconvergence problems areas are identified. All are redressed through applications criteria and code modifications tested using a hypothetical test case, a laboratory dam breach data set and the Teton Dam prototype-scale data.
