Abstract:

A collaborative research program has been undertaken in the UK to develop guidelines for the use of various proprietary reinforcement systems to enhance the erosion resistance of grass on embankments and in channels, such as auxiliary dam spillways, subject to occasional but extreme flow. Experience of the use and performance of these products has been drawn together. Prototype field trials and laboratory model studies have been undertaken which have demonstrated the effectiveness of reinforcement. Guidelines on recommended design practice are currently being finalized. The results are also relevant to non-grassed waterways.
