Modeling the Effect of Weirs on Reservoir Releases

by Adrienne Nemura, Virginia State Water Control Board, Richmond, VA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

A computer model was developed to examine the influence of weirs on the rise of water levels and increases in velocities from reservoir releases. The model allows for investigation of different weir geometries and placements and the effectiveness of these weirs when subjected to various boundary conditions. The model was applied to a 21 mile stretch of the New River between Claytor Lake Dam, near Radford, Virgina, and Big Falls near McCoy, Virginia.
