Abstract:

Studies were performed to identify measures to improve the safety of the project under earthquake and extreme flood conditions while permitting the owner to store additional water under normal reservoir conditions. Of principal concern was the structural integrity of the morning glory spillway tower and steel ring gate. Analyses indicated the need for aeration of the spillway throat and venting of the flow over the steel ring gate. The rehabilitation measures incorporated the aeration facilities in an economical design. Additional freeboard was provided by raising the crest of the earth dam with precast concrete highway median barriers.
