Abstract:

The concept of simultaneously, selectively withdrawing water from multiple levels in a thermally, and therefore density, stratified reservoir is presented and its usefulness discussed. The problem of predicting, under various operating conditions, the amount of flow through each withdrawal level within a single wet well outlet structure is discussed. A theory to predict the flow distribution between these levels is presented and the assumptions made in its derivation are outlined. The resulting algorithm is applied to data from both laboratory models and prototypes. The general applicability of the algorithm based on the comparison of predicted and observed flow distributions is discussed.
