Abstract:

Recent developments in expert systems technology have enabled expertise to be represented within a computer solution. This technology has allowed for the development of 'intelligent' advisory programs, which provide expertise and judgment to inexperienced practitioners. The application of expert systems to vibration engineering can raise the performance level of the non-expert engineers. Expert systems for the interpretation of vibration analyses for the purpose of diagnosing problems with rotating machinery have been developed by Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation. Development and implementation issues are described. in this paper, which discusses vibration patterns, problem diagnosis, and other aspects of the subject.
