Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Computing in Civil Engineering

Abstract:

A National Science Foundation sponsored workshop recently convened at the University of Illinois to help construction industry professionals determine the research needs and opportunities of the future. The internationally attended gathering focused its attention on project-wide database and communication systems; knowledge-based expert systems; simulation of construction site and management activities; and robotics. Using that conference and its proceedings as a base, the author in this paper discusses appropriate directions and priorities for computerized construction research as well as strategies for putting this work into practice.
