The Basics of Water-Resistant Brick Walls

by Gordon J. Jones, General Shale Products Corp, Johnson, City, TN, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Application and Performance of Structural Materials and Exterior Facades

Abstract:

Water-resistant masonry walls of burned clay or shale brick are the result of a conscious effort to produce them, by everyone involved in their creation. Furthermore, owner maintenance is required to assure a continuation of satisfactory performance of water-resistant brick walls. The myth of 'leaky brick' is easily disproved by a simple demonstration, while another device shows how water can actually pass through a solid-looking brick wall. The design professions are responsible for practical, reliable details, and for taking the lead in assuring workmanlike construction, as well as material quality.
