Abstract:

The productivity of two Caterpillar model 245 hydraulic backhoe excavators was analyzed during their use on a highway construction project in September 1983. The hoes were working in a borrow pit situation which required that they load several different types of haul units. Mack tractors pulling 21 cy bottom dump trailers, Mack 13 cy rear dump trucks with three rear axles, and Mack 12 cy rear dump trucks having two rear axles, made up the primary fleet of haul units though there were some rear dumps down to the 8 cy size. The main objective of the study was to compare the actual production, realized in the field, to published production estimating data.
