Abstract:

When discussing available compaction equipment we must keep in mind the purpose of compaction. Compaction is the art of artificially increasing the density or increasing the unit weight of material to support a given load. We compact materials to: give materials a greater strength to support load, to reduce settlement or shrinkage, to reduce permeability, which is the ability of water to flow through materials. When choosing the type of compactor to use, many questions have to be answered. The primary question is, what type of material is to be compacted? Other questions are, what is the density to be achieved, what is the production rate, and what type of equipment is available to achieve the desired compaction density. Now we will discuss the many varied types of available compaction equipment.
