Abstract:

Final covers or caps are incorporated into a completed landfill to limit the amount of moisture percolation through waste materials. A properly designed final cover system provides the first line of defense against the generation of significant quantities of leachate from a landfill. Natural clay caps, processed clay caps or polymeric membrane caps may be used as part of the final cover system. This paper is a review of design considerations and guidelines for the design of final cover systems. Case studies involving Woodward-Clyde Consultants' experience with the design of recently completed final cover systems are described.
