Abstract:

The inelastic dynamic response aspects of tall steel buildings with eccentric K-bracing and eccentric X-bracing systems are examined, when subjected to factored El-Centro and computer simulated earthquakes. The relative efficiencies of these structural systems are evaluated in the inelastic dynamic ranges of deformation. The effects of shear in the post-buckling truss elements are examined to suggest a technique to evaluate a critical buckling load, which could be utilized in the inelastic dynamic analyses. Finite element analysis of typical connections are made to evaluate potential regions of increased stresses due to forces obtained from the inelastic dynamic analyses.
