Abstract:

The design and construction of an eight hundred foot long by sixty-five foot high cofferdam is discussed. The cofferdam was located to permit major renovation of the existing downstream dam while maintaining hydro-electric generation at the site. In addition to a discussion of the conventional design used for cells on a deep foundation, stability analysis of cells on a sloping rock surface and the means used to stabilize the cells against sliding and tilting during construction and in the dewatered state is addressed. Further, the difficulties caused by previous construction debris, a rock and cobble layer within the top 15 ft. of the river bottom, open windows between adjacent sheets, use of welded 30 degree wye connections, and interfacing with the existing dam structure are discussed along with their resolution.
