Abstract:

The vertical curve is analyzed as a moment diagram for a uniformly loaded single beam with a concentrated moment at one end. This contributes some flexibility in approach, and enhances efficienty of solving the curve. It also renders analysis of vertical curves a familiar process to a wider circle of engineers, and makes it less likely to be forgotten, especially by those who encounter these curves only occasionally.
