Abstract:

The design loadings for support of the elevated guideway of the Detroit Downtown People Mover (DPM) consist of high vertical as well as horizontal loads. In order to simplify foundation design for the 170 columns to be installed along the 2. 9 mile route, the soil conditions along the alignment were simplified into as few profiles as possible. Soil borings and subsequent laboratory tests of the samples recovered were used to obtain the design soil strength data. However, a horizontal plate load test, a record search and building and utility surveys provided additional information to aid in design of cost effective and constructible foundations.
