Abstract:

The modeling of geometrically non-linear discrete structures by an equivalent continuum is presented. The discrete-continuum analogy is developed by first isolating a unit cell of the structure then replacing it with an equivalent continuum element. To define a continuum representation of the discrete model, equations of equilibrium for the discrete analytical model are derived, then stress-strain equations for an equivalent continuum are defined by relating model point-loads to continuum stresses and member extensions and rotation to continuum strains.
