Abstract:

The classic macroscopic Kachanov-Rabotnov model of material damage due to voids is reviewed. Detailed analyses of bulk mechanical properties of dilutely voided materials with certain, simple, well defined void shapes, are then presented and discussed. A simple model for self similar void growth is applied in an approximate analysis to show how the tensile strength is limited due to simultaneous thinning and void growth.
