Abstract:

This paper describes the following criteria proposed for setting allowable defect sizes in girth welds: PD 6493:1980, 'Guidance on Some Methods for the Derivation of Acceptance Levels for Defects in Fusion Welded Joints,' BS 4515 Appendix H, 'A Proposed Appendix for BS 4515 Containing Defect Tolerance Criteria for Girth Welds Based on A Fracture Mechanics Approach,' API 1104 Appendix A, 'Alternative Standards of Acceptability for Girth Welds,' CSA Z184 Appendix K, 'Proposed Changes to CSA Z184 to Accommodate Alternative Standards of Acceptability. ' These criteria are applied to a set of hypothetical examples for the purpose of comparing their results. Both the situation of allowable applied strain level for given defect size and allowable defect size for given loading conditions are addressed.
