Abstract:

Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is a large diameter soft ground highway tunnel constructed through sensitive over-consolidated silts and clays. Its large diameter necessitates the construction of the permanent liner, consisting of concrete filled perimeter drifts, before beginning the excavation of the tunnel interior. This article describes the construction methods and equipment used to excavate and concrete the perimeter drifts.
