Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of the engineering performance and cost effectiveness of the guideway and station foundations of Dade County's Automated People Mover (APM). This project required the consideration of various special conditions typical of a congested central business district, such as the effect of APM generated vibration on adjacent structures, many of them weakened by age and poor maintenance. An overview is given of the uniqueness of the alignment's geotechnical and utility constraints, and of the difficulties encountered in obtaining an accurate subsurface exploration.
