The Redevelopment of Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California

by Norman P. Swenson, US Army Corps of Engineers, Planning, Div, San Francisco, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '85

Abstract:

The San Francisco Port Commission is desirous to upgrade the wharf area to revitalize the fishing fleet. The key element for such redevelopment would be a breakwater to protect the berthing areas; only then would redevelopment of the on-shore facilities make sense. To this end the Army Corps of Engineering has been studying the problem for a number of years. The Fisherman's Wharf Breakwater was authorized for construction under Section 135 of Public Law 98-151 in November 1983. The plan which was authorized under this Act has been modified somewhat in the post authorization planning studies as the result of model studies.
