Environmental Mitigation Planning for Impacts on Salt Marsh

by John Foley, NJ Dep of Environmental Protection, Div of Coastal Resources, Trenton, NJ, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '85

Abstract:

This paper discusses two projects constructed or proposed on tracts which contain coastal wetland areas of environmental significance. Without proper planning, the impacts of these developments would result in a deleterious effect on the surrounding salt marsh ecosystems which have been mandated under law for protection. The first project is an exemplification of poor communication and mismanagement which could have been better handled under different circumstances detailed in the report. The other project was successful to the extent that certain procedures were followed in accordance with proper planning techniques.
