Abstract:

It is shown that the system of bed contact flocculation followed by standard dual media filters provides a viable alternative to both conventional as well as direct filtration, particularly at low to moderate levels of turbidities. The key to the success of this new system is the contact flocculators ability to store large quantities of incoming solids at a very low rate of headloss build up. Moreover, these contact flocculators exhibit reasonable potential for the production of large unisize strong and highly filterable flocs which are removable inside the receiving dual media filters. In such case, flocculation is accomplished without any need for mechanical energy.
