Abstract:

The rapid growth of computing power available in desktop micro and mini computers has placed at the disposal of individual scientists and engineers a very powerful set of tools designed specifically for information management. This tutorial provides an introduction to these tools, commonly known as data base management systems, or DBMS. The basic concepts of data base management are presented, including typical data models, query and data retrieval methods, and the types of user interface available. The common features and advantages of DBMS software are discussed, and criteria for DBMS selection are outlined.
