Abstract:

Booster pumps for fire protection in tall buildings and small sewage pump stations have been available for many years as factory-built packages. These packages include pumps, motors, controls, and associated valves and piping, all mounted on a common support system and performance-tested prior to delivery. In contrast, common practice in public water systems is to specify custom-built, field-assembled pumping systems. Use of a factory-built package in a municipal system also can result in significant savings. Further, a factory-built pump station package does not have to be an 'off-the-shelf' design. It can be designed by the engineer to meet specific project requirements. Extra benefits are that pump station controls can be factory-tested along with the pumps, motors, and associated valves and piping, and that all are the responsibility of one manufacturer, rather than several.
