Abstract:

The pipeline is intended to transfer solids between the Jones Island and South Shore treatment works a distance of approximately 12 miles (19. 3 km). The 4 conduit pipeline comprising 2-12 double prime (304. 8 mm) and 2-14 double prime (355. 6 mm) pipes is designed to operate in both directions, transferring primary solids, excess waste activated solids and storm water solids in one direction and waste activated solids used for fertilizer production in the opposite direction. The hydraulic design of the pipeline system optimizes pipe size and number to respond to the range of 162 possible operating conditions caused by sludge production and demand rates as well as variations in solids concentration, head conditions, reliability, redundancy and surge considerations. The entire system is designed to operate without intermediate pumping stations utilizing identical two-stage centrifugal pumps with a working pressure limited to 250 psi. (17. 6 kg/sq. cm)
