Dispersal of Wastewater in the Ocean--A Cascade of Processes at Increasing Scales

by Norman H. Brooks, California Inst of Technology, Environmental Quality Lab, Pasadena, CA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Water for Resource Development

Abstract:

An engineering system for marine waste disposal is described. Design decisions are based on broad categories of input information: the complete description of the waste to be discharged; the physical, chemical and biological properties of the ocean receiving waters in the various seasons of the year; and the water quality and bottom sediment objectives to be met. Collection of field data, the necessity for approximate solutions and ocean processes are explained. Examples are given.
