Government Agency Perspective on Standard for Drilled Shafts

by Samuel D. Stone, TVA, Knoxville, TN, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Analysis and Design of Pile Foundations

Abstract:

Relative to the proposed ASCE standard for Design and Construction of Drilled Shafts, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) would be considered an 'owner'. However, in past installations of drilled shafts, TVA has performed the functions of geotechnical engineer, structural engineer, driller-constructor, inspector, and owner. Most drilled shaft installations have been performed through design-construct contracts. TVA's past drilled shaft work has equalled or exceeded the criteria in the proposed standard. Therefore, the proposed standard will probably have little impact upon the agency's operation.
