Part of: Structural Engineering in Nuclear Facilities

Abstract:

Current regulations require that pipe breaks be postulated in high-energy lines and measures be taken to prevent consequent damage to essential structures and systems. The paper addressed pipe whip impact as a result of the postulated pipe break. The paper reviews the current approaches for assessing the integrity of the protective devices such as structural barriers and pipe whip restraint under the pipe whip impact. The paper identifies the important parameters which affect the response of the target under the pipe whip impact load, and how these parameters differ from other impact phenomena due to tornado generated missils, turbine missiles and heavy object drop. Limitations of current approaches and recommended research are presented.
