Abstract:

Since underground construction in soft ground is newly developed in Shanghai, there is little experience there as compared to what is known for specific sites in other countires. Well known tunneling techniques had to be adjusted to meet the needs of China's environment. In some cases, new methods had to be devised. Areas of tunnel construction for which adjustments or innovations were made are long distance pipe jacking, and the use of cast in-situ walls or precast concrete sheet piles. These techniques are described and illustrated.
