Document Type: Feature article

Abstract:

The design of recycled asphalt paving mixtures is compounded by the amount of asphalt and its properties in the reclaimed asphalt pavement. Formulas are presented for proportioning the reclaimed asphalt paving material, aggregate and asphalt for different asphalt contents as well as for establishing a job-mix formula. The formulas allow the designer to keep constant the ratio of either the reclaimed asphalt to new asphalt of reclaimed asphalt material to total material in the recycled mix. Procedures are described either for selecting the grade of asphalt cement or for proportioning the reclaimed and new asphalt to achieve certain consistency properties in the blend. Sets of formulas are presented for situations where asphalt content is expressed as percent by total weight as well as percent by weight of aggregate.
