Abstract:

ASCE has taken a stand on requirements for renewal of engineering licenses. The statement supports efforts to assure public safety but does not recommend mandatory additional requirements at this time. Such additional requirements would include continuing education. Several states are considering legislation that would require course work as proof of current competence for lawyers and engineers. Liability insurance is now a big problem for doctors and an increasing one for some engineers, particularly geotechnical people. Continuing education as proof of current competence is sometimes suggested as a tie-in with liability insurance.
