Abstract:

The San Bernardino Freeway Express Busway, a joint project of the Southern California Rapid Transit District and California Department of Transportation, is the nation's first specifically designed bus rapid transit project. Constructed on former railroad right-of-way, it extends from the Los Angeles Central District easterly for approximately 11 miles to the City of El Monte. This paper describes the objectives of the project, the details of busway and station design and the operation controls used, and reviews operating experience to date.
