Abstract:

A review of NCASI's technical studies related to evaluating equilibrium partitioning (EP) theory as it is commonly applied in regulatory setting is presented. Although interim results are insufficient to conclude that EP theory is without flaws, they are supportive of the hypothesis that non-polar hydrophobic compounds bind to colloidal materials in proportion to the concentration of DOC present and that EP theory appears to be an adequate predictor of chemical distribution within stationary sediment beds. Ongoing experiments and future research directions are also described.
