Abstract:

A multi-dimensional transport model based on the RMA series of finite element models has been developed utilizing a characteristic-Galerkin approach. This paper examines the application of the characteristic-Galerkin approach in systems using 1, 2, and 3 dimensional quadratic finite elements. Performance of the new model is compared to that of the original RMA models and to analytic solutions. Results are presented for simple test cases and for a simulated tracer release in the San Francisco Bay-Delta system.
