Structural Analysis for Structural Design

Abstract:

This paper presents a simple extension to conventional structural analysis that serves to provide additional information that is of significant use to the structural design process. Specifically, it is shown how the results of first-order sensitivity analysis can be effectively used to modify a structural design in a near-optimal way while avoiding the tedium and expense of a trial-and-error analysis/design process. As presented, the concepts may be applied for skeletal frameworks in general. However, for reasons of required brevity, they are illustrated herein for a simple pin-jointed truss.
