Abstract:

Unobstructed incipient motion data from a variety of sources are compiled to re-examine current thinking regarding riprap stability. Shields' framework is investigated and relationships are proposed between Froude number and Shields' parameter. Such relationships suggest that current methodologies result in over-sized riprap when flow fields are at or above Froude number of 0.8.
