Abstract:

This paper discusses the development of a prototype real-time knowledge based expert system (KBES) to demonstrate the feasibility of assisting the operators of surface street Traffic Management Centers in responding to traffic operational problems. The system, ARTIST (Arterial Real-time Traffic Incident reSponse Tool), replicates three stages of human response and monitoring of effects of responses. This paper describes the development of the verification, response and monitoring knowledge bases for the system, and their testing using G2 real-time KBES development software on a Sun SPARC station.
