Abstract:

The Marine Prediction Institute (MPI) was established as a marine warning and forecast center which will originate and issue analyses, guidance, forecasts, and warnings of relevant marine variables for the waters adjacent to the U.S. including the Atlantic and Pacific basins, the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Alaska, and the waters around Hawaii. This paper discusses the rationale for the establishment of the institute, its product suite, mission and organizational structure. The overall approach to implement MPI activities is also described.
