Strategies for Estuarine Management: Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

by Gary D. Lytton, Florida Department of Natural, Resources, Naples, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '93

Abstract:

In 1990, FDNR initiated the development of a strategic plan that identified significant resource threats to the Rookery bay estuary, and five primary resource management strategies in support of the FDNR/NOAA mission: land acquisition, research, education, restoration and law enforcement. Each management strategy has been designed to address specific resource threats, both within the outside current NERR boundaries. The design and implementation of these management strategies at the Rookery Bay NERR is reviewed, and an evaluation of effectiveness and application to other estuarine ecosystems is discussed.
