Abstract:

A method is developed for calculating the probability (reliability) that the total plastic displacement of an elasto-plastic oscillator does not exceed a critical level during a reference period. The oscillator has a degrading stiffness and is subject to a Gaussian white noise. The reliability can be obtained from the absorption probability of a two-dimensional Markov chain associated with the oscillator. The analysis simplifies significantly when the plastic excursions are rare.
