Abstract:

In this paper, some general aspects as well as selected design details of vertical Kaplan turbines are presented. The Monroe Street project which is under construction right now serves as an example to explain the today's concept for a medium size Kaplan turbine. In order to support the selection of the appropriate turbine concept, the significant characteristics of this turbine type are discussed. Finally a simplified design concept for smaller sizes is described.
