Abstract:

By thinking back to the past efforts of shore protection works against coastal disasters in Japan, the reasons why many sandy beaches have disappeared and why the present shore protection system keeps people away from the waterfront is explained at first. In order to create a more comfortable coast for responding to demands that the public wants to have a better view of the coast and to utilize it for various purposes, a new protection system, namely, the Integrated Shore Protection System (ISPS), is to be developed. In this paper, the basic concept of ISPS and its first application including technical investigations are introduced.
