Abstract: Knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) are computer programs, based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, designed to reach the level of performance of a human expert in some specialized problem solving domain. Expert systems (ES) have a great potential for practical use in ill-structured problem solving domains, such as retaining structure selection, where explicit algorithms do not exist. A knowledge-based developmental prototype system is described in this paper for retaining wall selection and the subsequent design of the selected structure. Although the ES includes the various types of earth retaining structures, this paper presents the outline of the design procedure for only the cantilever wall. The prototype, developed using the M.1 knowledge engineering shell, incorporates algorithms and heuristics that simulates the selection process of experts or design engineers.
