Abstract:

A methodology for in situ determination of Smith soil model parameters for wave equation analysis is presented. The method uses a small-rod penetration test in conjunction with CAPWAPC signal match procedure to deduce the soil parameters. However, significant effects of the size of the penetrating rods (or piles) on the soil parameters have been observed from the field test results. A tentative scaling rule is suggested for extrapolating soil parameters from small rods to large-size piles.
