Small-Scale Meteorology of Freezing Precipitationby Austin W. Hogan, U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and, Engineering Lab, Hanover, United States,
Abstract: Freezing rain and glazing are extremely disruptive to transportation, communication and power transmission. Local variations in the occurrence of freezing rain may be difficult to forecast. This paper describes terrain-induced temperature differences, and provides an analysis showing terrain-induced cold air retention during warm advection. Calculations indicate that it may be possible to locally ameliorate freezing rain in valleys with more than 300 m of local relief.
