Abstract:

Flow properties of the front of a turbidity current are investigated using the two layers model which takes into account of pick up and deposition of sediment. The amount of pick up rate was estimated through laboratory experiments. Governing equations of the flow thickness, density and velocity of the head of turbidity currents are derived by means of the characteristic curve method. From inspection of the resultant equations, division of progress and decay of turbidity currents is obtained.
