Field Calibration of Neutron Gauges: SCS Method

Abstract:

Field calibration of neutron gauges is easy and requires very little time under normal circumstances. Special soil sampling equipment is required that can be fabricated by most machine shops. The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) procedure allows soil water measurement using the neutron gauges with an error of less than 1 percent compared to gravimetric sampling. A brief description of the SCS method is presented.
