Abstract:

This paper presents a microcomputer based software system suitable for a local agency which will permit a local bridge system to be systematically evaluated with the use of a bridge management system. The bridge management system selected is based on a level of service goals approach. This system was developed so weighing factors, level of service goals and bridge parameter data are kept in separate database files so criteria can be changed to meet local conditions. The results of evaluation of two local bridge systems is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of accurate and consistent bridge parameter data. A brief procedure is proposed to permit the implementation of a bridge management system at the local level. This approach encourages input from all involved parties in setting policy and level of service goals.
